Apalachicola Inshore Best Bets Column June 2004 - May 12, 2004

June has always made me think of Strawberry Shortcake and presents (my birthday is in June) but since hooking up with Tommy Robinson, the month of June has taken on a whole new meaning for me. May and June both offer some of the most diverse fishing opportunities of the year here, with a dozen or more different species of fish being a daily occurrence. Tarpon will have moved in strong, and daily reports of big redfish schools on the flats, speckled trout in the bay and Spanish mackerel abound. Tripletail showed up a bit early this year and are on the daily catch list as are pompano, flounder & sheepshead. Even the little cobia are fun to catch and release, ladyfish are great jumpers and sharks are as scary as they are exciting. The lack of any appreciable rainfall (read drought) has kept the area water pretty clear, in general fishing conditions have been consistently good since the beginning of April. In the last few weeks I can only think of one day that was really too windy to fish out of a flats skiff, but the bayfishing was still good!

June also means that school is out for the summer and families will be spending their vacations here at the beach. What an excellent time to take a kid fishing! Can you think of a better way to spend a day (or a half day) with your kids than to share time on the water, to witness the pride and excitement on their face when they hook up and reel in a fish on their own? The priceless smiles as they pose for that Kodak moment holding tightly to their big fish and the satisfaction theyll feel that night when they actually get to eat that fish even picky eaters will try something they fought, caught and brought to the table. For the Moms whod rather not cook on their vacation, several area restaurants will gladly prepare your cleaned catch.

Longer days in June present us with the ability to fish when the fishing is best, perhaps its the relative cool of the early morning or possibly it could be a sunset fishing cruise, out of the heat of the day. And if youve never experienced one of our sunsets by water, you are in for a treat. So, whens the best time to fish? Id have to say As Soon As Possible.
