First, a little background on winter time fishing out of Apalachicola Florida. We are lucky enough to enjoy the benefits of both saltwater as well as fresh water fishing year round. This insures that on a day a little too windy to be out on the open flats, we can find a place protected enough to put our clients on fish. In the saltwater you will commonly find Redfish & Trout which tend to head up into the grass & marsh areas, and Sheepshead and Flounder even in some of the colder weather. The Apalachicola River System keeps the Striped & Sunshine (hybrid) Bass happy most of the season and Black Bass and Apalachicola Painted Bream are also found.
Generally, flats fishing activity this time of year is limited to the sunny warm days between fronts, but we tend to fish (and catch!) as long as it is safe to do so. Temperatures vary from lows in the low 40's to highs in the low to mid 70's and the wind stays around the 5-10 range.
NOW, the fishing report - Capt. Nathan Donahoe poled his skiff in Little Bay all day on 12/9 while Brian Miller cast gold spoons at 17" to 27" Reds. They managed to land about 15 of them. On 12/13 a low pressure system settled over the area, gracing us with rain and 20 knot winds. Capt. Tommy Robinson gave his client Dr. David Lint the opportunity to reschedule, but he was determined to wet his fly line and managed to land 12 speckled trout and 2 nice redfish. (Did I mention that we are C&R?) Yesterday the weather turned back around and Dr. Lint experienced the type of redfishing we are used to. They launched the Jonboats at Indian Pass to fish the shallows west of here and sight fished quite a few Reds in the 6 to 8 pound range and saw many others to cast to. Capt. Ward Holman sight fished 5 nice Reds on Spin Tackle using a Black Grub. If you would like to subscribe to this weekly fishing report, please send me an email.
